Training teachers

It is urgent, as I say, to prepare good teachers and lecturers, giving them a thorough training in human knowledge, teaching skills, Catholic doctrine and personal virtues; teachers who, by their own merits and professional exertions, will achieve a high standing in all teaching environments.

Lay mentality and apostolic zeal

There need to be men and women who practise this profession with a lay mentality, in the conviction that by this professional work they will be able to provide for themselves and their families, develop their God-given natural talents, cooperate effectively for the good of mankind, attain Christian perfection and contribute apostolically to spreading the Kingdom of Jesus Christ.

It is necessary, in short, for there to be many teachers who are able to make their profession into an instrument for social progress and for their own and other people’s sanctification, with self-sacrifice, a spirit of service and human enthusiasm; so that, in doing their noble work of teaching, in the most varied sectors of knowledge, guided by faith, they may repeat the words from the book of Wisdom: I learned without guile and I impart without grudging; I do not hide her [wisdom’s] wealth (Wis 7:13).
