Lies in the world

It could be said, without too much exaggeration, that the world lives on lies. And it is now twenty centuries since Jesus Christ, the divine Word, who is the Truth, came to men. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (…) The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (John 1:4-5, 9-12).

Spreading the Truth, the basis for peace

In all surroundings we have to be messengers of that light, of that divine Truth which saves.

Error not only darkens people’s minds; it also divides wills. Only when people get used to telling and hearing the truth will there be understanding and concord. That is our aim: to work for the supernatural Truth of the faith, while also rendering loyal service to all partial human truths. We want to fill all the paths of the earth with charity and light. And to do all this constantly, with expertise, without losing heart, and with no omissions, seizing on all opportunities and all lawful means for imparting the doctrine of Jesus Christ, precisely in practising our own profession.

Application to the field of education

If this is true for everyone – all our apostolate is fundamentally catechesis – it is even more true for those who dedicate themselves to teaching. That is why the task of teaching is a great and beautiful one, if teachers are able to do it with the appropriate professional training and with a vibrant apostolic spirit, because “study is ordered to knowledge, and knowledge without charity ‘puffs up’, and therefore produces dissent. Among the proud”, it is written, “there are always dissensions. But knowledge accompanied by charity ‘edifies’, and engenders concord.”⁴
