Divinisation, without humility, leads to a fall

My children, I cannot hide from you my fear that in some cases this divinisation, if it doesn’t have a deep foundation of humility, could lead to presumption, to the corruption of true hope, to pride and, sooner or later, to spiritual ruin. This can happen when people unexpectedly experience their own frailty.

I often use the example of the dust that is lifted up by the wind until it forms a golden cloud high up in the sky, because it is lit up by the rays of the sun. In the same way, the grace of God lifts us up high. And there resonates in us all this wonder of goodness, wisdom, effectiveness and beauty that is God. If you and I realise that we are but dust and wretchedness, of no value, the Lord will do the rest. This is a consideration that fills my soul.

But divinisation without humility? That is bad! And if the divinisation is corporate, it is even worse! For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down (Ps 18[17]:27).
