Building on foundations of humility

In order to lay the foundations of a building, it is sometimes necessary to dig down deep and sink huge steel piles until they come to rest on bedrock. But there is no need to do so if you reach solid ground right away. For us the bedrock is this: piety, divine filiation, abandonment in God’s hands, sincerity, and keeping our minds occupied with the constant reality of ordinary life: I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer (Ps 18[17]:1-2).

It is Our Lord Jesus Christ himself who tells us, Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it (Matt 7:24-27).
