United to Our Lord

Alone, we cannot do anything worthwhile, because we will have cut off the path of our relationship with God. Sine me nihil potestis facere (John 15:5); apart from me you can do nothing. But united to our Lord, we can do all things. Omnia possum in eo qui me confortat (Phil 4:13); we can do all things in him who strengthens us, even though we make mistakes and commit errors, as long as we struggle to avoid them.

Someone I know ‒ I have never managed to know him well ‒ once dreamt that he was on an aeroplane at a great height, and not inside but on the wings. And he suffered terribly. Our Lord made him understand that this is how souls without interior life go about at the heights of the apostolate while in constant danger of falling: suffering and feeling insecure.
