Making the value of these works of mercy understood.

Certain overly displayed expressions of charitable benevolence have been so disfigured and satirized that some people regard some acts as archaic that are actually proper to the Christian spirit. That is why I want you to understand very well (and have others understand too) the deep supernatural and human significance of these means, which we have used right from the start.

All these works of mercy – consoling the afflicted, visiting the sick – have been blessed by Christ himself. It is not right that actions born of a true Christian spirit should be shelved merely because some have converted them into an ostentatious and empty gesture or a sedative for the remorse of their own conscience.

Always give new life to these means of formation

Do not let the divine effectiveness of these long-established Christian practices be lost out of routine or laziness. Always give them new vigor. Make it clear that they are not an old gesture that has gone out of fashion, but are very dear acts of great value. This ought to lead people to practical conclusions. Teach people, therefore, the great supernatural value of these small acts, which help to gain heaven and bring happiness on the earth.
