But how can they bring other Catholic citizens habitually to forgo their rights and submit to a monopoly that has no reason for existing? Very often they achieve it by what we might call a deception, although I don’t mean to question whether they are acting in good faith. This deception lies in confusing Catholics, by asking them for a useless and absurd unity in matters of opinion in the name of the necessary and reasonable unity in all that refers to the faith and morals of the Church.

With well-organized political campaigns they unsettle public opinion and make people believe that they alone can be a bulwark or defence for the Church in their country’s specific circumstances. Sometimes they actually create (and then keep up for as long as they can) an artificial situation of danger. This way they can more easily convince Catholic citizens of the need to sacrifice their free temporal options and support the party that has officially taken up the Church’s defence.

Don’t be surprised that the deception can sometimes be so clever that even the Church authorities do not realise it and somehow come to support the confessional party. In this way they officially strengthen its character and its claim to impose itself on the consciences of the faithful.
