United by the Church’s teachings and the divine call

Indeed, the only things which unite us are the doctrine of God’s Holy Church, the divine calling, and the desire to serve the Church as faithful and grateful children. This is our supernatural ambition, one completely opposed to any human ambition or desire for personal gain. We don’t work to make a name for ourselves, but rather to disappear and by our sacrifices to place Christ at the summit of all human activities.

All the glory for God

Our motto is that of John the Baptist: illum oportet crescere, me autem minui (John 3:30); it is fitting that Christ should grow in me, and that I should become small. For that reason, our greatest ambition – the Work’s true glory – is to have no human glory, so that all the glory goes to God: soli Deo honor et gloria.²⁸

We have already seen the example of Jesus Christ. Let us look at him again, turning to a wonderful text from St Paul, which I quoted to you on another occasion: we have an obligation … not to please ourselves. For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “the reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me” (Rom 15:1,3).
