Therefore, in order to be effective you should work with naturalness, without making a spectacle and without trying to draw attention to yourself, passing unnoticed. You will go unnoticed just like a good father who gives his children a Christian upbringing, a good friend who gives his friend some advice full of Christian spirit, or a manager or businessman who ensures that his workers are well looked after both spiritually and materially.

Personal humility

You ought to work silently, therefore, but without mystery or secrecy. We never have, and never will have, any use for them, since they are not necessary for serving God. Besides, they are repugnant to people who have a clear conscience and live an upright life. You will work silently, with a personal humility so deep that it necessarily leads each of you to practise collective humility and not want to receive the esteem and the regard that are deserved by the Work of God and the holy lives of your brothers and sisters.

Heroism in collective humility

This collective humility, which is heroic and which many people will not understand, is the reason why those who belong to the Work go hidden among their equals in the world, without receiving applause for the good seed they sow. The people around them will hardly notice, and will find it hard to explain it fully, that bonus odor Christi (2 Cor 2:15), the aroma of Christ, that my children’s lives inevitably give off.
