God’s instruments

The spectacle of the wonders that God works through our hands should serve as an occasion for us to humble ourselves and to praise God. It will lead us to acknowledge that everything comes from him, and that we have done nothing but get in the way, or at most are only poor instruments in his hands.

We must realise that many other souls have worked much better than any of us; they have sacrificed themselves more and prayed more perseveringly. But our Lord has wanted to use you and me more than those other people to make it clear that it is he who is acting and that the instruments don’t count, or count for very little.

For God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God (1 Cor 1:27-29).
